Update: Ansar Khan reports that the reason for Lilja's lingering headaches is a bleeding vein. The news is not only disappointing but frightening as well. Lilja stated they could go in and attempt to stitch it up, but that carries obvious risks. He of course will not be ready for the start of the playoffs. Sending positive vibes and all the best.
Wings play tomorrow, playoffs are 3 games away, and I am a ball of stress, excitement, and anticipation. hmmmmm what could I possibly compare it to? Nothing. Absolutely nothing equates to Red Wings playoff hockey.
So in order to distract myself, I've been reading everything and anything I can....
Let's see. First up Ansar Khan is reporting that news on the Lilja front is not promising. Apparently he had an MRI on Monday and is awaiting the results. The headaches are still there and as Brad Stuart said, it took him 6 months to recover from his concussion....
There are only a few things that I allow to really tug at the heart strings; a beautiful pair of perfect Jimmy Choo shoes (shut up, I'm a girl), repeatedly watching the Colorado Avalanche fail and stumble, and reveal themselves for the bitches they are, and of course Red Wing playoff hockey where the fans stress but secretly have utter confidence in their potential. Thanks Chief for the write up.
NHL.com lists 6 captains who have had an impact on their team this season. Lidstrom is listed but his write up is pretty much fluff....no mention of his players only meeting which hopefully drug the rest of the team around the corner or any of his other accomplishments this year. But at least the Wings Super Swede was included.
The Chief is on fire today with another great find on the epitome of class , Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch.
Yesterday I mentioned how bizare and confusing I found the comparison of Datsyuk's skills to that of tying a cherry stem in a knot. I thought this may be one of the worst analogies I have heard during all of my years watching hockey. But then I found this video. Yep, those are the Plymouth Whalers, and yes he did just compare the coverage to smothering them with a bloody blanket...WTF. mmmhmmmm I'm speechless and that never happens....
And just so you know, an update on the goal of the year now has Franzen listed in last place. Apparently my cry for help back fired.....similar to Diddy's 'vote or die' conundrum.

Rock the vote
Ok you have two missions on this hump day. And please, don't even begin to claim you don't have time. If you have stumbled upon this blog, then you clearly have been searching around the web and have time for these tasks.
First and foremost, head on over to The Triple Deke to cast your vote for the 2009 NHL MVP. What? Did you really think there would be other options? If so then I may have another word for you and it's not as nice as douche but rhymes with brother trucker. Thanks in advance for the vote!
Second, please go to NHL.com to vote for the goal of the year. Detroit's very own Johan Franzen has been nominated for his goal against the Canadians. In case you forgot, this is the goal where Datsyuk shifts from his own body into Franzen's so Mule cannot only embarrass the goalie, but also two or three defensemen. Ahhhhh Red Wing hockey.
Yes I know Mule could have been nominated at least twice for goal of the year. His superman that ho, excuse me superman that goal, could certainly be a contender.
But sadly enough, while doing my civic duty and voting for our friendly Swede, I noticed Franzen was in second to last place. So come on lets at least get a strong showing.
However, there was something that surprised me a bit more. Since Ovechkin's goal has already been deemed by the media to be the goal of the century, the goal of a life time, and very possibly the second coming, I assumed he would be in first......but you know what happens when you assume. Apparently TJ Oshies goal is strongly in first. hmmmmm I bet Sidney Crosby is having a little giggle about this over his fruity pebbles and chocolate milk this morning....

A win and a few milestones
Let me preface this by saying, it may be a rather pathetic post game recap. I know I know, they usually are rambling and pathetic, but none the less, you were forewarned that this one may be particularly brutal. I was slightly distracted by preparing to watch MSU, as well as dealing with some rather weird behavior from my disturbed maltipoo. But here we go....
The first period was essentially similar to what the Wings have been putting out in the first all year. A rather lackadaisical effort. (yes I used the word lackadaisical and I am not 85, leave me alone) What differentiated this was the performance by Chris Osgood! Yes, he came up with some huge key saves all game. After about 2 minutes into the first the shot clock read Buffalo 4, Detroit 0. And I have to give Ozzie credit he performed under the pressure. At the end of the first the shots were 14 to 10 buffalo. Yep that's right, out shot all period.
What other treats did we have in the first? Well apparently it is now perfectly acceptable to high stick Mule in the face and draw blood, directly in the refs line of sight I might add. I can't even imagine how they missed that call. I know I previously mentioned my dislike for continuously complaining about the officiating, so I am just going to assume that they thought Franzen purposely grabbed the stick and smacked himself in the face. We should be thanking them for ignoring Mule's clearly unsportsmanlike behavior. Phew, that feels better right? Just ignore the fact that he required stitches and a shield afterward, or the fact that he let the blood continuously drip down his face in protest like the bad ass he is.
As always the versus announcers didn't disappoint. Two particularly profound statements stand out. First they spent a good 5 minutes fixating on the fact that the Sabers were wearing their magical (their word not mine) black jerseys. Did you know that they were 11 and 3 in those jerseys? Exactly the kind of insight and intelligent statements missing from hockey. Maybe next they can discuss the pixie dust and rays of sunshine used in the trainers room.
As weird as that may have been, after the game, during their recap, they brought out a much more random and puzzling statement. While attempting to describe the overall awesomeness that is Pavel Datsyuk, they compared his dangle dangle moves to something along the lines of tying a cherry stem into a knot while skating past defenders. Now being someone who likes to write about the Wings, I understand it is difficult to describe exactly all that Dats does, but come on. Really you compare what he does on the ice to someone tying a cherry stem into a knot while on skates? I don't even know where to begin with that fuckery. (and sorry but the word fuckery was specifically created for these statements) Not only does it make absolutely zero sense, and completely insult the overall greatness that is Datsyuk, but it further proves the NHL has no business being on Versus. And I am not even going to touch the fact that tying a cherry stem into a knot is usually used to highlight another type of skill, and it doesn't usually involve hockey skates...
Ok off my soap box concerning the mess that is Versus and onto the game. After the first period the Wings played really well. Dare I say they looked like the team from last year? shhhhh I will wait and see but it was wonderful to watch last night. They were physical with everyone from Lidstrom to Datyuk checking hard, they battled in the corners, and seemed to have a sense of urgency all game. Hossa scored two goals making his total 40 this year. When he keeps playing like this a small part of me screams out in agony at the thought of him not being in the winged wheel next year.....
Of course Datsyuk played well and Lidstrom had a great game. St. Nick scored the 4th goal on an open net after a great play by Ericsson holding onto the puck.
Speaking of Ericsson he got into what I guess would be considered a fight. While it ended quickly Ericsson threw most of the punches and it was nice to see him step up and defend his teammates. I am sure his gaggle of fan club members creamed their panties over that one. The fight was a welcome change from watching Samulesson throw punches with his gloves on, which shocking he did again last night. Shut up Don Cherry.....
Before I finish this rambling and sporadic post, yes I admit it, I think it's necessary to comment a bit more about Ozzie. Not only did he come up with big saves throughout the game, he also seemed to be playing father out of the net and positioning himself much better. He also had what I would consider to be one of the plays of the night. On the Wings powerplay, the puck came back down to Ozzie while the Sabers were changing lines, Ozzie read this and quickly played the puck back up ice allowing Stuart to get the first goal. It was a great play.
The one goal the Sabers did get wasn't Osgood's fault. He stopped the initial shot and Chelios let his man walk in completely undefended and Ozzie didn't have a chance. (I am far to exhausted to go into my Chelios rant, but I think Meech should have played over him. In fact I was expecting him to play....) Luckily the Wings held on and had a 4-1 win which now has Osgood tied for 10th overall with Hasek. Congratulations!
Alright, aside from that, this game left me wondering, does Lidstrom ever get bored with his amazing awesomeness? I wonder if it ever gets tiring being Super Swede? hmmmmm well either way it seems as though Super Swede's players only meeting had some short term effects. Here's hoping they are able to maintain them long term.

Go Green!
Well today is a day where I learned what it feels like to be incandescently happy as well as mortally terrified. It's a weird feeling and I really don't know how to describe it. Maybe it's like the feeling you get in your second semester senior year, one final left, you can see the end, you can feel the buzz of excitement, but it's gut wrenching knowing you may completely fuck up your capstone class? I don't know my brain is too scattered.....
Tonight both the Wings and the Spartans play. It is a little gift from heaven. Detroit plays at 7 est and MSU plays at 9:21. Yes I am ready for stress, cold sweats, and muffled screams of terror.....
Detroit plays Buffalo and I am sure it will be as difficult, if not more so than yesterday. If Buffalo loses they are pretty much ensured early tee times and vacations. Ozzie starts again, which was expected since he apparently is the fearless playoff starter. As I am too anxious and nervous and am more focused on not breaking down into a blubbering mess at work due to my anticipation of the State game tonight, I am not prepared to do a thorough game day up date. Although you will probably wonder when I have EVER done something thorough and worthwhile.....As always, head on over to OntheWings where Matt doesn't disappoint.
Michigan State, championship game tonight, enough said. Go Spartans. Cue the chills....

Kick his ass Seabass
Ok so I try to keep the Sidney Crosby posts essentially non existent, but I figure this was worth pointing out. He took exception to a clean hip check on Malkin and decided that he was personally going to kick Ballard's ass.....hmmmm ok.
Luckily for Ballard's sake, Crosby kept his rectal examination kit in check. Let's just say his ass will live to see another day. But not only did Sid the Kid start a pointless fight over a clean hit, but I think his face absorbed most of the punches.
I can just imagine Mickey personally shedding a small tear for 'old time hockey.'

The elusive number 5-0
I think my sister summed it up best when she text me "phew" at the end of the game. Yeah I couldn't agree more. The Wings finally snagged their 50th win, but it certainly wasn't without a little stress and the need for a new manicure. 3, 2 Wings with less than a minute left in the game.
For the first time in awhile Detroit came out flying. They scored their first two goals in the first period and their forechecking left Minnesota simply trying to react and play catch up. I will say the defense looked much better. A bit tighter, maybe not as tight as a new prisoners ass cheeks, but tighter non the less. The turnovers were certainly minimized
Lets see, Homer was a beast again. Great to see him back and playing strong right before the playoffs. His hard work in the corners and hussle to keep the puck in the Wild's end was a huge difference in the game.
Speaking of Homer, the NBC announcers don't normally bother me as much as the brilliant pair on versus, but some of their mistakes today were quite glaring. Apparently Homer changed his name from Tomas to Nicklas. I don't know if he did this in honor of Lidstrom....or just because he figured it would be easier to have 3 Swedes named Nick on the team? I don't know....maybe he can explain that later. I also learned that apparently Hudler and Samulesson are the same person. Their names were interchangeable at least.
Aside from the Win, the other great news of the day was Zetterberg stepped out of the haze and had an AMAZING game. He was responsible for the nice pass to Hudler on the first goal, but really all day he was backchecking and really working hard in the neutral zone to spread out Minnesota's trap and also hold the puck in their zone. Great to see him in Conn Smyth form again. I guess the players only meeting worked for him!
Hossa also came to play. Not only did he score the game winner, but he was responsible for Datsyuk's second goal. He made a great play along the boards, held onto the puck sent a great pass to dangle dangle, who patiently waited and had a nice backhand into the goal.....beautiful.
I was also pretty impressed with Kopecky today. I wasn't expecting him to play but he worked hard when he was out there. I would like to know who is responsible for letting him know he's big and can HIT! Come on, take credit.
Hmmmmmm what else, what else....I hate to do this, because I don't like to complain about the officiating unless it was a glaring mistake. (which I guess this was) Overall I like to believe it will even itself out....but how the hell did they not call the cross check to Samulesson's neck??? Quite brutal.
Ok. Sigh. While there was all of that positive, there was also some negative. And even more than I hate to complain about the officiating on here.....I also hate to bring up the Wings goaltending issues again. Yes it is exasperating.
Today I learned what it means for a goalie to try to win it for a team, and for a goalie to almost lose it for his team. Backstrom had 44 shots on goal and Ozzie had 21. the score was 3-2. In this instance the numbers speak for themselves. Backstrom was the only reason the Wild were even in this game. I think he personally had Zetterberg's number because I don't know how many times he stopped him.
Osgood on the other hand. Sigh again. I guess I can say he had his first assist of the season? No it wasn't for the Wings. It was a result of the nice pass to Clutterbuck for the first goal. A miss play on his part also eventually led to the second goal. It was frustrating to watch because you could tell the team wanted to win this game more than a high school boy wants to score on prom night. Luckily Ozzie did come up big on a Koivu attempt and Hossa was able to get the game winner. But it was a close game when it certainly shouldn't have been.
I can't remember who said it, but one of the announcers said Osgood always puts up and has never really had to shut up. Ummmmm ok ignoring the fact that he completely butchered that statement and turned it into some sort of conundrum, I will take it back and say I wish Ozzie would put up and shut up. He's keeps talking about how he is in perfect form, and I can't wait to see it. And really I do like Ozzie, I've always been a fan....just waiting for him to come around, and waiting and waiting....
Alright overall, it was nice to see the hustle from the team. I'm not sure what did it for them and I am now just hoping they can keep it up. Great effort and great to watch. Let's just end this by saying, I am cautiously optimistic.
Update: Paul Kuklas has the below quote from Gaborik. Yeah, my thoughts exactly. But thanks Marian for pointing it out...ouch.
“Too bad we didn’t finish,” Gaborik said. “[Chris] Osgood was shaky out there. We could have scored a couple more goals on him.”

Wings, Wild- Bff vs Bff
Detroit plays Minnesota tomorrow afternoon, or really freaking early for those of us out west.
I guess the big news about this would be Marian Hossa's BFF Marian Gaborik will be back. Awww very cute same name. I am sure everyone has heard those rumors going around about Gaborik and Hossa wanting to be a package deal next year. (yeah whoever started that rumor, nice try) This may be the one time where Bitchman's salary cap is ok with me. Gaborik needs to step away and remember Hossa wants to be a Wing. Maybe Kopecky will need to call an emergency sleep over and pillow fight to make sure Hossa remembers he wants to stay in Detroit.
Anywho, Gaborik has come back from his hip surgery, wrist injury, broken baby pinky, stubbed toe, back issues, sprained ankle, etc. etc. I know I know you have to feel bad for him and the Wild, he's been injured A LOT.
Hossa had this to say about his friend "He's got a quick shot and he's a superstar." True and Koivu will be back so the Wings have a challenge on their hands. Will they be ready? Will Lidstrom's impassioned players only meeting work? Will Babcock's ringing endorsement and all around confidence as Ozzie for playoff starter translate to the rest of the team? I guess I'll find out early tomorrow morning. Until then all I can do is sit in the fetal position and anxiously wait to see if all of this plus the line shake ups will make a difference.
So I leave you with this. I think BOTH Daniels and Mickey were going to bust a nut over this penalty.
